Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
How do I distinguish the Bosch 1584AVS body from the 1584VS and 1584DVS?
Bosch's 1999 Product Service Department bulletin assigns distinct body codes: 060 1584 651 for 1584AVS, 060 1584 639 for 1584VS and 060 1584 839 for 1584DVS. The 2004 family instructions identify 1584DVS as the only model with an integrated dust port; they describe the AVS as requiring a separate Dust Collection Adapter Kit. Match the actual body suffix before applying either dust setup, and inspect a seller's package separately.

The family manual maps position II to medium-density material such as harder woods or particleboard. Position I is for softer work when a cleaner cut or delicate scrolling matters; position III is for soft material such as wood or plastic when speed matters. Bosch labels the chart a guideline and recommends trying scrap, so it is a starting setup rather than a finish or hardwood-thickness guarantee.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the Bosch 1584AVS use an external vacuum while beveling?
Bosch documents external collection only after adding the separate Dust Collection Adapter Kit to the AVS; the kit is not established as part of an unspecified 1584AVS offer. The manual says angled-footplate use requires removing the dust cover and reduces collection efficiency. This assessment therefore keeps the optional vacuum plan level and does not match vacuum collection and beveling as one supported arrangement.
Explore this need in the finder →What blade-shank evidence is specific to the 1584AVS instructions?
Bosch names the T101B as a blade that works with the 1584-family anti-splinter insert, and Bosch classifies T101B as T-shank. That documents a T-shank example, not every replacement blade or U-shank fit. The exact manual also describes a top-handle twist-and-click blade procedure; follow the tool instructions for the actual model and blade.
Explore this need in the finder →The Bosch 1584AVS is an earlier corded barrel-grip jigsaw with a six-position preset speed dial, a four-setting orbital selector, a three-position cutline blower and a bevel shoe. Bosch's family manual gives a 500–3,100 SPM span and material-specific maximum capacities, while its dust-extraction route for this AVS suffix requires a separate adapter kit. The exact offer's nameplate, package, condition and availability still need to be checked.
Match the full AVS suffix before comparing it
The Bosch 1999 Product Service Department bulletin assigns body number 060 1584 651 to the 1584AVS. It separately identifies 1584VS as 060 1584 639 and 1584DVS as 060 1584 839. That separation matters: the DVS has a built-in dust port, while the AVS can be converted for external collection with an optional Dust Collection Adapter Kit. A broad “1584” accessory-page string is not a reason to treat the suffixes as interchangeable.
The seller specimen photo shows a readable 1584AVS label, barrel body, shoe and cord. It is an identity reference, not evidence about another listing's accessories, testing or condition. The family manual gives no single voltage or current for every AVS; compare the actual saw nameplate with the intended supply.
Speed and orbit are two different adjustments
The 1584 family instructions depict a side slide switch and a six-position preset speed dial, not a variable-speed trigger. The manual identifies 500 strokes per minute at position 1 and 3,100 at position 6, with positions 3–4 described as medium. It does not publish a value for every intermediate position, so there is no sound basis for interpolating a precise speed at settings 2 or 5.
The separate orbital selector has four positions. Bosch's chart puts position 0 with hard material such as metals or thin sheet; position I with softer work when a cleaner cut or delicate scrolling matters; position II with medium-density material such as harder woods or particleboard; and position III with soft material such as wood or plastic when faster cutting takes priority. That chart is explicitly guidance, not a finish test. Bosch recommends trying scrap, and its tool tips caution against forcing the saw; a blade chosen for the material and a controlled feed still matter.
Blade fit has an example, not a universal promise
The Bosch manual uses a hand-operated top twist-and-click sequence to change blades: set the orbit selector as directed, press the blade-change button, turn the top handle to release the clamp, place the blade in the plunger and roller guide, then turn until the lock engages. This is distinct from a tool-less lever on the front of the saw, and the buyer should inspect an old tool's clamp instead of assuming its mechanism is intact.
The manual says its anti-splinter insert works with ground-side examples including the Bosch T101B. Bosch's U.S. blade page classifies T101B as T-shank, which documents a T-shank example for this family. It does not establish that every T-shank blade is suitable for every cut or that U-shank blades fit. Bosch also lists separate steel and smooth plastic footplate inserts for the AVS/DVS; the plastic insert is for reducing scratches on delicate surfaces, not a claim that it eliminates all marring.
Capacity, bevel and dust collection have boundaries
The manual's “maximum capacities” table lists 2-3/8 in in wood, 1-1/4 in in plastic, 3/4 in in aluminum and non-ferrous metal, 3/8 in in mild steel, and 1/8 in in stainless and alloy steel. Those are manufacturer-published limits, not tested performance or a recommended thickness for every blade and stock. In particular, the document does not state a cast-iron capacity or a species-specific hardwood limit.
The footplate tilts up to 45 degrees either way; the printed scale marks 15 and 45 degrees and has a firm detent at 0. It uses an Allen wrench for adjustment, so check the scale and retighten the shoe rather than treating the angle as a quick preset. The three-position blower directs air toward the cutline or turns it off. It moves chips; it is not dust capture.
For the AVS, Bosch describes an optional Dust Collection Adapter Kit and shop-vac connection. That accessory is not established as part of a generic 1584AVS offer. The same instructions say angled-footplate use requires removing the dust cover and reduces collection efficiency. The finder therefore treats the optional vacuum setup as level-shoe operation; it does not present vacuum collection and beveling as one compatible arrangement.
1584AVSK is a package, not another saw body
The manual's standard-equipment list associates a plastic footplate insert and carrying case with the AVSK suffix. A retailer-hosted exact 1584AVSK product sheet adds three assorted blades, a steel insert kit and an anti-splinter insert to the listed no-mar plastic insert kit and case. That paperwork and the pictured auction box establish a historical package configuration, not what an individual seller still has. The image below shows one AVSK-labelled box, saw, case and loose accessories; ask for a written inventory and verify every item in the actual lot. Do not assign the AVSK case, blades or inserts to a plain 1584AVS listing.

The 1584AVS suits a buyer seeking this exact barrel-grip, corded control layout who will verify its nameplate and inspect the blade mechanism. It is not a current-stock or tested-performance recommendation, and no seller condition, price, availability or recall clearance is claimed; no exact-name recall query was run.
