A useful fit for

A shopper already working in Bosch's 12V Max battery system who wants a compact barrel-grip cordless saw for the documented wood, aluminum or mild-steel capacities and accepts a tool-only package.

The main tradeoff

Battery and charger are not included, there is no listed case or integrated blower, and the reviewed page/manual do not document an external vacuum route.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the JS120N include a Bosch battery or charger?

No. Bosch labels the JS120N bare tool and says the battery and charger are not included. It belongs to Bosch's 12V Max system, so check the exact battery platform before purchase; an 18V pack is not assumed compatible.

Which orbit setting does the JS120 manual describe for harder wood?

The manual describes setting 2 for medium-density stock such as harder woods; setting 0 is its hard-material/thin-sheet setting and setting 1 is for cleaner soft-material cutting or delicate scrolling. Bosch recommends scrap test cuts because this chart is guidance, not a guaranteed finish.

Does the JS120N have dust collection or a built-in blower?

Bosch's current specification table says the JS120N has no dust blower, and its exact page plus linked manual do not document an external vacuum route. Choose another reviewed setup if one of those dust routes is essential; do not infer compatibility from the saw's barrel-grip shape or from another Bosch model.

The Bosch JS120N is a 12V Max cordless barrel-grip jig saw sold as a bare tool. Bosch lists a 3/4-inch stroke, six dial speeds from 1,500 to 2,800 SPM, a three-position orbital selector, T-shank-only blade clamp and 45-degree bevel range. This is a different job and power arrangement from the corded JS572-series: the JS120N depends on a compatible Bosch 12V Max battery, while the product page says the battery and charger are not included. The review is based on Bosch's current US product page and linked manual, not hands-on use.

What the bare-tool package asks you to supply

The JS120N's listing identifies it as the bare tool and explicitly says no battery or charger is included. Bosch describes it as part of the 12V Max platform. Anyone who owns a Bosch pack should check its exact platform and fit rather than assuming that any Bosch battery—including an 18V pack—will work. The page lists no case, either. Its package list does include a T-shank blade, anti-splinter insert, no-mar plastic overshoe and bevel wrench. Those details distinguish a useful ready-to-hold tool package from a complete cordless cutting setup: the battery and charger remain separate requirements.

Bosch lists the bare tool at 3 pounds, 9.4 inches long and 6.75 inches high. A battery changes carried weight and balance. The page gives no battery-capacity or runtime figure, so general runtime wording is not a duration promise.

Barrel grip, blade system and three action positions

The small barrel body places the front grip closer to the cutting line than a top handle by design, but that geometry is not a promise that every user will find it more comfortable or accurate. Bosch provides a variable-speed dial and a separate slide on/off switch. The 2014 JS120 manual lists six speed settings between 1,500 and 2,800 SPM. Bosch's current product page describes a tool-free blade change and switchable LED lighting.

The clamp takes T-shank blades, not U-shank blades. Bosch's manual says the blade must sit correctly in the guide roller and warns against forcing a poorly seated blade into the clamp. The product page lists three orbital positions, identified in the manual as 0, 1 and 2. Setting 0 is for hard material such as metal or thin sheet; 1 is for cleaner soft-material cuts or delicate scrolling; and 2 is for medium-density stock such as harder wood, or soft materials such as wood and plastics when speed matters more than a clean cut. Bosch calls this guidance and recommends scrap test cuts.

Material and bevel boundaries

The current page calls out wood and aluminum and lists a 2-1/2-inch wood capacity. The linked JS120 manual lists the same 2-1/2-inch wood figure plus 1/8 inch for aluminum and 1/8 inch for mild steel. These are Bosch's published specifications, not cut-depth tests for this review. Do not extend them to harder, thicker or unlisted materials. For metal or similar stock, the manual instructs the user to apply coolant or lubricant alongside the cutting line; choose a suitable blade and follow the instructions for the material.

The die-cast aluminum footplate can tilt up to 45 degrees. Bosch's manual describes detents at 0 and 45 degrees and marks at 15, 22.5 and 30 degrees. It instructs users to remove the anti-splinter insert before adjusting the shoe. That insert is a finish aid for supported blade styles, not a permanent shoe part; the manual names ground-side blades such as T301CD, T101B, T101D and T101DP as examples of compatible profiles. The exact blade matters if a flush, low-splinter surface is important.

Dust is a limitation, not a hidden accessory

Bosch lists no integrated dust blower for the JS120N. The current page's compatible-accessory list names the JA1010 guide and JA1013 anti-splinter insert, but not the JS572-series JA1012 vacuum kit. The reviewed product information and JS120 manual do not document an external-vacuum arrangement for this model. That does not prove that no aftermarket fitting could be devised; it means this assessment will not match it to a required vacuum connection or claim a built-in dust-control route. If collection at the source is essential, choose a model with a manufacturer-documented extraction setup and check whether its shroud affects bevel adjustments.

The switchable LED is a work light, not a cut guide. Bosch's manual also advises securing small workpieces, not forcing the saw and selecting a blade for the curve and finish. A compact body does not guarantee precision.

Who may shortlist the JS120N?

It is a candidate for a shopper who already has—or intends to buy—the compatible Bosch 12V Max battery system, prefers a barrel-grip cordless tool and needs a compact saw for manufacturer-documented wood, aluminum or mild-steel work within the stated limits. The three-position orbit, variable-speed dial, LED, included overshoe and angle range add useful control options. It is not a good choice if a battery and charger must be in the box, if you need a built-in chip blower or documented vacuum extraction, or if the project needs a four-position orbital system or U-shank blades.

Compare it with the corded JS572EBK by separating power source, grip, capacity evidence and package contents: JS120N's page and manual agree on 2-1/2 inches in wood, while JS572 publications conflict. Before ordering, confirm the JS120N suffix, Bosch 12V Max pack, bare-tool contents and manual. A catalog listing does not establish seller inventory, price or a particular offer's battery contents.

Sources and assessment limits

This assessment draws on Bosch's exact US JS120N product page, the linked JS120 operating and safety manual, the Bosch cordless-jigsaw category, and an exact-name CPSC recall query that returned an empty array on 2026-10-28. This bounded exact-name lookup cannot rule out later notices or alternate-name indexing. No ownership, personal use, test cuts, measurements, price, stock, rating or customer experience is claimed.
