Festool CARVEX PS 420 EBQ Corded Barrel-Grip Jigsaw (576181) review

The 2021/2022/2023 U.S. Festool materials identify this corded 420 configuration; inspected 2026 catalog pages 120–127 show current cordless PS/PSBC Carvex products and related accessories rather than this EBQ model. This does not prove formal discontinuation or lack of seller stock. Barrel grip with side on/off switches and a speed wheel; the manual describes a latch/continuous-switch option and an automatic A speed setting. It is distinct from PSB 420 EBQ’s variable-speed trigger.

A useful fit for

A corded, earlier-reference 420 barrel grip for shoppers who value the side-switch/dial control arrangement and want the manual’s broad material and capacity guidance.

The main tradeoff

It requires a mains cord and the optional angle base for bevels; vacuum collection and the angle base cannot coexist. One exact retailer spec table conflicts with Festool’s 400 W manual/catalog value, so verify the nameplate.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the PS 420 EBQ match a corded barrel grip T-shank softwood-orbital requirement?

Yes for that manual-described plan. Festool recommends pendulum settings 1–3 for softwood, and the PS 420 EBQ is the barrel grip corded model. It is rated at 400 W and 120 V with a 1,500–3,800 SPM range. This is not a cut test or finish guarantee.

Can the PS 420 EBQ use a vacuum and bevel at the same time?

No documented combined plan: Festool says external extraction is not possible with the optional WT-PS 420 angle table, which is required for ±45-degree beveling. Choose the extraction arrangement or the angle-table arrangement; verify the separate adapter, hose and angle base in the offered package.

Can the PS 420 EBQ cut ceramic with orbital action?

No: the manual's material table specifies pendulum setting 0 for ceramic, so the supported ceramic arrangement is straight action. The 120 mm wood, 20 mm aluminum and 10 mm steel maxima do not specify ceramic depth.

A source-based assessment of the earlier-reference Festool CARVEX PS 420 EBQ (U.S. item 576181), the corded barrel-grip member of the 420 pair. It has a 400 W, 120 V supply, a 1,500–3,800 SPM range and a side-switch/dial control layout; it is not the top-handle PSB 420 EBQ.

Barrel-grip CARVEX with its own control range

The official U.S. manual describes the PS 420 EBQ as the barrel-grip configuration. It has on/off switches on either side and a speed wheel; the side controls can be latched for continued operation. The companion PSB 420 EBQ instead uses a D-handle with a variable-speed trigger. The PS barrel grip is therefore a distinct choice, not a suffix-only kit. This assessment is based on manufacturer documentation and is not a hands-on comparison of grip feel or accuracy.

The manual lists a 120 V, 400 W supply, a 26 mm stroke and four pendulum positions numbered 0–3. The speed wheel covers 1,500–3,800 strokes per minute, with an automatic “A” setting described in the manual; follow the control section for its exact use. Festool's older U.S. catalog describes the 420 motor as brushless. Those specifications do not say how quickly a particular blade will cut or how smooth a finished edge will be.

Match a blade and material to the manual's ranges

The published blade-dependent maximum depths are 120 mm in wood, 20 mm in aluminum and 10 mm in steel. The manual supports wood/wood-like material, plastic, steel or unhardened ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal and ceramic plate with a blade suited to that material. It does not set a capacity for cast iron or give a ceramic depth figure. A number for wood should not be transferred to a different material.

Position 0 is straight cutting; 1–3 add orbital motion. The manual recommends 1–3 for softwood, 0–1 for hardwood and steel, 0–2 for aluminum/non-ferrous material and position 0 for ceramic; plastic has a 1–2 recommendation. Speed guidance is a separate selector chart: softwood and veneer plywood 4–A, hardwood 3–A, hard plastic 3–A, soft plastics 1–4, aluminum/ceramic 3–5 and steel 1–4. Use the manual and blade-maker's instructions together; these are not measured results.

Vacuum and angle-base setups are mutually exclusive

The PS 420 EBQ can bevel to +45°/−45° with the optional WT-PS 420 angle base (item 496134). The angle base is not listed among the older 576181 package contents. The model manual says dust extraction is not possible when the angle table is used. For an external-vacuum plan, use the manual-described 27 mm extraction route and do not count on beveling with the angle base installed. The vacuum adapter/port, hose and extractor should be checked against the specific box and connection; a dust port shown in a package listing does not prove that the full hose system is included.

The older U.S. catalog lists two T-shank wood blades, chip catcher, splinterguard, Plug-It cord, dust port and SYS3 M 137 Systainer with 576181. Dealer guides bridge predecessor item 561593 to 576181. The exact image on this page is from a retailer's 576181 listing and depicts the barrel body, cord and case; written package evidence comes from Festool's catalog/dealer material, not the photograph.

Resolve the catalog and retailer discrepancies before buying

The checked 2021 U.S. catalog and manual give 400 W. One retailer page for item 576181 instead labels it 550 W. Because the exact manufacturer sources agree with one another and the retailer's specification conflicts, this assessment uses Festool's 400 W figure and preserves the disagreement. Compare the offer's nameplate and official manual rather than assuming a retailer spec table is authoritative.

The 2021–2023 records identify the corded 420; the checked 2026 Festool catalog pages show the current cordless 420 generation and related accessories rather than this EBQ tool. I classify this as an earlier-reference configuration, not proof of discontinuation or seller unavailability. Confirm the 576181 label, included case/accessories, seller condition, return terms and power nameplate. There is no current price or stock claim, and no performance test or ownership experience is implied.
