Festool CARVEX PSC 420 EB-Basic Cordless Barrel-Grip Jigsaw (576522) review

Festool's current U.S.-listed 18V-class CARVEX cordless barrel-grip configuration. The Basic set lists a blade, splinterguard and SYS3 M 187 Systainer but no battery or charger; verify the exact box because the 2026 catalog and live product-page summary differ on blade count and chip catcher.

A useful fit for

A compact 18V-class barrel-grip setup for users who specifically want the PSC control layout, a T-shank clamp, selectable pendulum positions and a compatible Festool BP 18 battery. Its vacuum and bevel accessories are mutually exclusive in the documented configurations.

The main tradeoff

Basic 576522 is not a ready-to-run battery kit: it excludes the pack and charger, and the exact page/catalog package summaries differ on chip catcher and blade quantity. The barrel-grip model starts at 1,500 strokes per minute rather than the PSBC's 1,000, and Festool's BP 18 battery requirement is not represented by any questionnaire platform option.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the PSC 420 be shortlisted for softwood curves with orbital action?

Yes, its manual recommends pendulum positions 1–3 for softwood; keep the T-shank blade appropriate to the stock and do not read the recommendation as a cut-quality test. The PSC begins at 1,500 strokes per minute. The Basic package excludes battery and charger, and the current manual's safety label says BP 18 only.

Can this saw cut ceramic plate and still be set to straight action?

The manual includes ceramic plates among supported uses with a suitable blade and specifies pendulum position 0 for ceramic. Its published 10 mm steel, 20 mm aluminum and 120 mm wood maxima are blade-dependent, not ceramic capacity figures.

Can I connect a vacuum and still make bevel cuts?

No documented Festool Carvex setup combines the extraction adapter with the WT-PS 420 angle base: the cordless manual says extraction is not possible with the angle table. Choose the vacuum plan for dust capture or the angle-base plan for +/-45-degree cuts, then confirm the exact adapter and package.

This is a source-based assessment of the U.S.-listed CARVEX PSC 420 EB, not a hands-on test. Its defining choice is a cordless barrel grip with the PSC's speed-wheel and on/off-switch arrangement; the PSBC 420 EB has a different D-handle and adds a variable-speed trigger.

PSC 420 EB means barrel grip, not the D-handle PSBC

Festool lists PSC 420 EB-Basic, item 576522, as an 18 V cordless jigsaw. The 2024 model manual maps PSC 420 EB to the barrel-grip variant and PSBC 420 EB to the D-handle. On the PSC, the illustrated controls are on/off switches on either side plus an adjusting wheel for stroke rate. The PSBC adds a separate variable-speed trigger and safety lock. That difference matters more than the shared CARVEX name if you already know which grip and control motion you prefer. A handle label is not a promise of comfort; inspect the exact form if hand position is decisive.

The PSC manual lists a 1,500–3,800 strokes-per-minute range and a 26 mm stroke. Festool's current Basic page labels its range “RPM,” while the manual describes strokes per minute; use the manual's unit when comparing reciprocating action. Both CARVEX cordless versions have four pendulum positions: 0 is straight up-and-down motion, and positions 1–3 add orbital travel. The Basic item page's displayed weight is 3.75 lb; the manual says 4.0 lb without a battery. Those published numbers are close but not identical, so they are not a measured head-to-head comparison.

Use the material chart rather than assuming every mode suits every cut

The manual describes wood and wood-like materials as the standard work, with suitable special blades allowing plastic, steel and unhardened ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal, and ceramic plate. It gives blade-dependent maxima of 120 mm for wood, 20 mm for aluminum, and 10 mm for steel. These are manufacturer-listed capacities, not tests of a particular blade, species, finish, or feed rate. The source does not establish cast-iron use or a “hard metal” plan.

The material chart is more useful for choosing action than a single capacity number. Festool recommends positions 1–3 for softwood, 1–2 for plastic, 0–1 for hardwood and steel, 0–2 for aluminum or non-ferrous metal, and 0 for ceramic. Thus the PSC can answer a softwood-plus-orbital requirement, but ceramic is a straight-action case. Harder materials, thinner stock, clean-edge work and curved cuts may call for reduced orbit. The manual also recommends matching speed to material and uses automatic load detection at the “A” setting. None of those source instructions guarantees a clean edge; blade selection, support and setup still matter.

Basic 576522 is not the battery kit

The exact U.S. Basic page says batteries and charger are not included. Its live “Contains” summary lists a saw blade, splinterguard and SYS3 M 187 Systainer. The current 2026 English U.S./Canada catalog page for item 576522 lists two T-shank wood blades and a chip-catcher package column, which the live page summary does not spell out. I am leaving the exact blade count and chip-catcher inclusion unresolved here rather than pretending the two primary descriptions are identical. Confirm the actual offered SKU and seller's box contents before treating it as a ready-to-run kit.

The distinct 576527 PSC 420 HPC 4,0 EBI-Plus page describes a different package of the same PSC saw: two BP 18 Li 4.0 Ah HPC-ASI battery packs, a TCL 6 charger, blade, splinterguard and SYS3 M 187 Systainer. That package variant makes sense only if those specific included supplies matter; it does not change the PSC body or its operating limits. In either version, the current manual's safety label says to use Festool BP 18 batteries. The finder has no Festool battery-platform answer, so its generic cordless result cannot verify your existing pack.

Vacuum extraction and beveling are separate setups

The manual documents a separate extraction adapter for a 27 mm hose and says to work with a suitable extractor. It does not describe the PSC as having an integrated cutline blower, and the Basic page does not list that adapter. Verify the adapter part, hose fit and package; do not assume the tool-only set captures dust by itself.

Beveling is possible only with the optional WT-PS 420 angle base, which Festool lists for CARVEX jigsaws with stepless adjustment between +45 and −45 degrees. The cordless manual is explicit that dust extraction is not possible with the angle table. That is a real setup conflict: choose the vacuum arrangement or the bevel base, not both fitted for the same cut. With the extractor installed, the documented plan is square cutting; with the angle base installed, do not promise vacuum capture.

Who should shortlist the PSC?

The PSC is the more relevant CARVEX choice if you specifically want barrel-grip operation, a T-shank clamp, cordless Festool BP 18 supply and four-position pendulum adjustment. The D-handle PSBC offers the same core material chart but a different grip, a trigger-and-lock control, and a 1,000 SPM lower-speed starting point. Neither is a meaningful substitute for a saw in another battery ecosystem, and no Festool choice exists in this site's battery-platform question.

Before choosing, compare Basic 576522 with Plus 576527, verify the exact battery and charger included, ask which blades and chip guard are in the box, and check the additional accessories needed for vacuuming or bevel cuts. The evidence supports a capable, system-oriented setup with clearly stated boundaries, not a promise about purchase price, current stock, measured precision, runtime, or cut quality.
