Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Is VJ06R1J the same saw as the VJ06Z bare tool?
Makita’s VJ06R1J kit page and VJ06Z tool-only page link to the same VJ06 manual and parts breakdown. The kit adds two BL1021B 2.0Ah packs, a DC10WD charger, blade and case; the bare tool excludes battery and charger. The flyer’s case number and parts list’s case-related number differ, so verify the actual package.

The VJ06 manual lists 3-1/2 inches in wood, 3/8 inch in mild steel and 13/16 inch in aluminum at 90 degrees. Its flyer has a row that appears to put 3-1/2 under steel, but that conflicts with the model manual. Treat these as manufacturer specifications, not a measured cut result.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the VJ06 vacuum setup also bevel?
The manual documents a 0–45-degree base and a dust nozzle that connects to a Makita vacuum, but does not establish both at once. Treat vacuum-plus-bevel as unverified. The manual also says the anti-splintering insert cannot be used on bevel cuts.
Explore this need in the finder →This assessment uses Makita’s discontinued VJ06R1J kit page, the exact VJ06 manual, parts list and new-tool flyer; it is not a hands-on test. The headline distinction from the older VJ04 is not simply the CXT battery: VJ06 is documented as a brushless top-handle saw with a longer stroke, a five-position speed dial, tool-less blade changing and soft-start/no-load-speed features. Its kit suffix also matters because the bare VJ06Z is sold without the kit’s batteries and charger.
Read the package suffix before comparing offers
Makita marks the exact VJ06R1J product page discontinued. The linked VJ06Z page describes the same 12V max CXT brushless top-handle saw as a tool-only package, and both pages point to the shared VJ06 manual and parts breakdown. The flyer lists two BL1021B 2.0Ah batteries, a DC10WD charger, a jigsaw blade and a tool case in the VJ06R1J package. The flyer calls the case 821549-5; the parts list identifies a VJ06R1J plastic case-related item as 197210-9 and also lists an inner tray. That case-number discrepancy should not be silently normalized. The model assessment covers the saw, while any offer’s exact case and accessories should be confirmed separately.
Both kit and bare-tool records remain earlier-model references, not statements about inventory or condition. The package does not turn the VJ06 into a different saw. The LXT XVJ05Z is a separate 18V barrel-grip model and does not use VJ06’s CXT battery platform.
What the VJ06 manual supports
The model manual specifies a 7/8-inch stroke, a variable 800–3,000 SPM range, and manufacturer-listed 90-degree capacities of 3-1/2 inches in wood, 3/8 inch in mild steel and 13/16 inch in aluminum. It names BL1016, BL1021B and BL1041B CXT battery cartridges and lists 4.1–4.4 pounds with battery, depending on the configuration. The flyer has a capacity row that appears to assign “3-1/2” to steel; the VJ06 manual instead clearly identifies that value as wood and gives 3/8 inch for mild steel. This assessment follows the model manual, not the flyer’s apparent table error. These capacity figures are manufacturer limits, not measured results for every blade, stock or angle.
There are two separate adjustments. The five-position dial sets speed from 1 to 5, while the trigger controls operation; the flyer describes a large two-finger variable-speed trigger and lock-on button. A second lever selects straight action or one of three orbital positions. The manual recommends straight position 0 for mild and stainless steel, plastics, and clean wood or plywood; small orbit for mild steel, aluminum and hardwood; medium orbit for wood/plywood and faster aluminum or mild-steel cuts; and large orbit for faster wood or plywood. That is a material-specific starting chart, not a promise of finish or productivity. The flyer also describes soft start and no-load speed reduction; those are feature claims, not our tested performance.
Makita’s exact page calls the blade interface T tang, but the manual warns to use B-type blades only. The parts breakdown lists B-10 US blade 792529-7 as standard equipment, and the flyer says a blade is supplied without a detailed model number. Confirm the exact B-type/model-approved blade before ordering replacements rather than relying on a generic label alone.
Vacuum extraction and bevel need separate checks
The VJ06 manual documents a dust nozzle through which a Makita vacuum can be connected. The package documents do not establish that nozzle as included with VJ06R1J, so budget for it only after verifying the offer and fit. Unlike VJ04, Makita’s VJ06 sources do not describe an integrated blower; do not assume the saw clears the cut line with a built-in air stream. The base does tilt from 0 to 45 degrees left or right. The VJ06 manual does not explicitly establish that the optional vacuum arrangement remains compatible while beveling, so this assessment leaves vacuum-plus-bevel as unknown rather than combining the two capabilities. It also says the anti-splintering insert cannot be used on bevel cuts.
When it may be worth comparing
VJ06R1J is a plausible earlier-model comparison for someone who has Makita 12V max CXT packs and wants a top-handle format, brushless motor, tool-less blade changes, and the manual’s larger published capacities over VJ04. It is still a 12V platform tool, and the manual’s numbers do not establish how a particular blade performs in deep stock. Compare the listed cut-action chart with your material and confirm how you plan to handle dust. If the kit contents are important, distinguish VJ06R1J from tool-only VJ06Z and verify the two batteries, DC10WD charger, blade, case and any separately sourced vacuum nozzle in the actual listing.
Do not choose it solely by brushless branding or a claimed runtime benefit. The source flyer describes the motor system and start features; it does not substitute for your own task requirements, blade selection or a real offer check. As the page is marked discontinued, condition, included pieces, warranty and seller terms may vary across any remaining inventory.
Limits of this assessment: no ownership, cut testing, measured runtime, durability, noise or customer experience is claimed. Product descriptions and specifications are attributed to Makita’s exact US pages and model-specific VJ06 documentation.
